Tatreez as a Form of Healing for Palestinians

Collective trauma requires collective healing.

Earlier this Fall, Dr Sawssan Ahmed, a task force member and clinical psychologist, reached out and informed me of the creation of the Culturally Informed Trauma and Grief Recovery Toolkit by the American Psychology Association (APA) Presidential Task Force led by APA 2023 President Dr. Thema Bryant. I, as a Licensed Social Worker, am honored to have created a resource for this toolkit amongst other practitioners, social workers, and psychologists in the field.

This national tool kit incorporates many healing tools created for and by various diverse communities. The resource I created is a five-minute video emphasizing the healing nature and capability of tatreez, and how embroidery can be used as a healing tool for individuals who have experienced collective trauma. This can apply to any group but is specifically tailored to the Palestinian community.

Refer to the full toolkit and all resources here, created by 20 Task Force members and 18 members of the psychology community.
